The most substantial of these additions is the titular enemy within: a human terrorist organisation known as EXALT that seeks to take advantage of the invasion for its own nefarious purposes. This way the player is able to organically discover each new addition throughout the game rather than have a table full of toys unceremoniously dropped on them in a tacked-on campaign. Instead, it seamlessly weaves its various additions and tweaks into the core game and central plot. Unlike many expansions, Enemy Within is not a self-contained narrative. With Enemy Within, Firaxis looks to evolve that title by fleshing out the core game with new tech, new missions, new enemies, new maps, and of course some new ways to customise soon-to-be-dead soldiers. With that release, the studio not only proved that the genre could be financially and critically successful in today’s action-centric market, but also that classic can be reimagined for a modern audience without tarnishing its legacy or alienating its existing fans. Last year Firaxis released XCOM: Enemy Unknown, its reinterpretation of the punishing and much-beloved turn-based strategy classic.
